Most Lawyer Advertising Not Helpful To Consumers--Tips for Finding the Right Lawyer
for Your Case

Turn to the lawyer section of any city\'s Yellow Page directory and you\'ll find 20 to
over 70 pages of attorney advertising, most of it not very helpful to a consumer
trying to make an informed choice. Most of the ads simply try to \"outshout\" one
another by taking up more space, using color and sometimes depicting gory accident
scenes.

\"Consumers looking at most lawyer advertising simply will not find information that
would actually be helpful in choosing an attorney\" says, Benjamin Glass, an attorney
in Fairfax, Virginia who has represented injury victims for 22 years. Glass, the
author of \"The Truth About Lawyer Advertising\" says that \"consumers need to be
proactive in finding an attorney who is the right fit for their needs.\"

Here are the steps he recommends:

1. Take some time to learn more about your legal problem. Don\'t just pick up the
phone and call a lawyer. Instead, surf the Internet and visit the local library.
Take personal responsibility for your case and get educated about your situation
before you call.

2. Gather the names of potential attorneys. Get references from friends and
neighbors and again, get names off the Internet and from the Yellow Pages.

3. Call and ask for written information. Ask this: \"I have a legal problem related
to [ ], can you send me whatever information your firm has that would convince
me that I should hire you for this problem.\" Study the information in the comfort of
your own home.

4. Narrow the list and interview 3 or 4 lawyers. Ask questions to discern their
experience and track record with your type of case. The most important question will
be, \"if I didn\'t hire you, who else in the area would you recommend?\"

If you keep hearing the same names come up as answers to this last question you can
be pretty well assured that you are making a good choice by selecting from that
list.
